Helena Templeton-Forsyth was once a well respected lady of the manner, but is now an old lady who lives in squalor through no fault of her own. She is stealing food from the local supermarket where she ends up assaulting 2 security guards and the police officers who arrest her. A young police officer named Stacy used to know Helena as a child and she learns as to why Helena has ended up in this state. In her past just before the world war, Helena Templeton is only a young child when, on christmas morning, she witnesses her father having an affair with the nanny. A confrontation between her mother and father sees Helena and her mother beaten and thrown out of the family home on christmas day.
This book was amazing, it switched between the past and the present perfectly and you followed how one young woman faced the hardships her father placed on her, became the spy in the war and managed to escape POW camps. Everything was so expertly written that i actually felt i was there with them through all of it due to the amazing descriptions. With love, loss and true facts from history this is an amazing book.
