Good day everybody.
Today we’re very lucky to have Lynette E Creswell giving us an interview, she is the author of Sinners of Magic.
Hi Lynette, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I live just outside Grimsby and have lived there since my husband retired from the Forces at the grand old age of forty. I was lost for a while, having moved to a new area and so this is about the time I started to think about writing my first novel. I had been working with a German Charity who helped to bring Chernobyl children over to stay with British families three times a year and was at a bit of a loss with myself. My husband went out and bought me my very first laptop and hey presto - ‘Sinners of Magic’ was born.
What are you favourite genres to read and write?
Like most writers I love all genres, if the book takes my fancy then I’ll read it. I write fantasy because it enables me to have such escapism and is so versatile.
I absolutely loved Sinners of Magic, did you find it difficult to come up with everything?
‘Sinners of Magic’ was a story that I never knew the ending until I wrote it. It’s change because I never knew my dad until I was 46 years old and when I embarked on my journey with Crystal, I hadn’t yet met him. Unlike my world, I created a place where Crystal would one day meet her father and so if you read between the lines, you will find my unconscious desires to have a mother and father that loved one another. Unbeknown even to myself at the time, parts of this story are entwined with wishful thinking.
What was your inspiration to write Sinners of Magic?
Most definitely, my mother. She believed I had the ability to become a serious writer and I wanted to prove to both of us that she was right.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers for naming characters as yours had some amazingly original names?
A lot of my names just came to me or I wrote names on bits of paper. I looked at how a lot of people put two names together to make one - such as ‘Bridge’ and ‘Mere’ - Bridgemear.
How often do you write and do you work to an outline or do you just see where it goes?
I write every day, if I don’t, I feel like I haven’t fed my baby, it’s so important to me. When I wrote ‘Sinners of Magic’ I just went with the flow and when I wrote ‘Betrayers of Magic’, I again went with the flow adding some new characters. However, with ‘Defenders of Magic’, I have had to sit and plot a little more thoughtfully as I needed to tie up all those loose ends and of course still deliver an unexpected surprise or two!!!
Like Crystal, the main character in your story has magical powers, if you could have one what would it be?
I think if I had one true power it would be to make anyone I choose speak the truth, can you imagine that? Oh yes, now let me get my hands on those who run this country!
Who is your favourite character and why?
If you mean in ‘Sinners of Magic’ I have to admit I love them all, (except King Forusian and Snitterby of course). I naturally love Crystal, Amella and Bridgemear. Beatrice is based on my grandmother so she has to be a favourite and I have a soft spot for Bracken and even Lilura (yes I bet you’re surprised there).
Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
Nope, but I do think I’m Mariah Carey when I’m singing on Karaoke having had too much Malibu???? - (Laughing) Don't worry I'm Celine Dion maybe one day we'll duet
What are you planning on writing next / writing at the moment?
I’m just editing my third novel ‘Defenders of Magic’ and hoping it will be out to purchase by Christmas although the way things are going it could be just after now. Then after I have a wee break, I’m hoping to start a new novel about a character called ‘Clump’ a Windigo, who is a huge part of ‘Betrayers of Magic’.
Author Bio
Lynette was born in London, England, and from the tender age of five she was raised by her grandmother and given books to help keep her quiet. Lynette found she had a passion for reading and subsequently started writing once she began school. Whilst at junior school Lynette’s teacher was so impressed with her writing skills that her stories were often read out to her classmates and her teacher told Lynette that she should try to develop her writing ability further.
Lynette never got that chance to further her career as a writer but once she was married she began writing bedtime tales for her young sons. Lynette’s husband was so impressed with her ability to capture their imaginations that he encouraged her love of writing by buying her a laptop in the hope she would write something more substantial. So with a little push in the right direction, Lynette decided her first novel would be something that all children love to read about (and some adults too) – magic!
Lynette’s inspiration came from several writers, firstly from childhood books written by Enid Blyton. ‘The Enchanted Wood’ and ‘The Faraway Tree’ were her first real taste of fantasy and later on Stephanie Meyer’s ‘Twilight Series’ captured her own vivid imagination. Her first novel, ‘Sinners of Magic’ was published in 2012 and still receives outstanding reviews. ‘Betrayers of Magic’ became the second book of the trilogy published in 2013 and last but my no means least, ‘Defenders of Magic’ will be the final chapter of this magical saga and should be out to buy in December 2013.
